2004 VOLLEYDOG TRYOUTS
March 24, 2004

Tryouts for the 2004 Garfield High School varsity and junior varsity volleyball teams begin MONDAY, AUGUST 23, 2004 Iin the Garfield gymnasium.

All prospective athletes, whether new or returning, must complete all necessary paperwork before entering the gym. Seattle School District Athlete Registration forms--which include a mandatory medical examination--must be submitted to the Garfield Main Office by AUGUST 11.

Tryouts for the twelve spots on varsity and twelve on JV should be highly competitive. Prospective Volleydogs should read and understand the Tryout Criteria, Time Commitment for Volleyball, Garfield Volleyball Team Philosophy and Parent Expectations.

Tryouts last five days, August 23-27. All prospective athletes must attend each tryout session. Final teams should be announced by the fifth day. Preseason practice continues August 30-September 3 for those selected to the team. The annual Alki Beach Day and preseason parent-coach meeting is September 4. The Varsity Jamboree is Monday, September 6 (Labor Day) at Bothell High.

Tryouts and preseason practices are 8:00am-1:00pm every day. Because each session begins at 8:00am SHARP, prospective Volleydogs are strongly encouraged to arrive fifteen minutes early each day. During the school year, practices are Monday through Friday 2:30-5:00pm, except on match days.

See you August 23!

2004 SUMMER VOLLEYBALL CAMPS
March 20, 2004

Space at summer volleyball camps around the Northwest is filling quickly. Hundreds of high school and middle school girls will spend a few days this summer tuning their technique and learning new skills at the University of Washington, Western Washington University, Seattle Pacific University and dozens of other venues in Washington, Oregon, Idaho and California.

For the second summer in a row, Garfield will attend the Jim McLaughlin Team Camp at the University of Washington. Coach McLaughlin also offers spots at individual camps, but you must act quickly to secure space!

2004 GARFIELD SCHEDULE ANNOUNCED
March 19, 2004

Garfield's 2004 schedule is the best yet, with great opponents, exciting tournaments and a nice balance in a tough conference. 2004 SPRING TRAINING JUNE 1, 3, 8 & 10
March 18, 2004
During the first two weeks of June, we’ll set up nets after school in the Garfield gym for Spring Training. The scrimmages will give the coaches an opportunity to evaluate returning players and start planning for next season’s teams. Have a friend who likes volleyball? Bring her along! We’ll set up a “beginners’ net” for anyone who is interested. So far, we have the gym reserved for from 2:30-4:30pm on June 1, 3, 8 and 10. It will be a good way to exercise before final exams and a great chance for all of us to reconnect.

ROY WINSTON, 72, A CHARMER WHO "HAD LOTS OF OPINIONS"
-Craig Welch, Seattle Times
July 5, 2003

Roy Winston could often be found in the stands, cheering volleyball players or a basketball team as if the kids were his own.

But at the buzzer, Mr. Winston would disappear from the gymnasium, plop his small frame behind the wheel of his baby — an aging, immaculate charter bus — and ferry the players back to school. [MORE ...]

VOLLEYBALL SCORING GETS A MAKEOVER
-Molly Yanity, Seattle Post-Intelligencer
January 31, 2003

Garfield coach Leslie HamaNn has been a vocal supporter of rally scoring.

"I pushed it so hard because, No. 1, we play on school nights. We played a match that went five games against Holy Names and it didn't finish until well after 10.

"It's good strictly because they are student-athletes," Hamann said. [MORE ...]
