STATE VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT MOVED ONE WEEK EARLIER

The 2004 state 3A and 4A volleyball championships will be bumped up a week to Nov. 5-6 to keep the two-day event at the Everett Events Center.

Last year's tournament marked the first time the venue played host to the volleyball championships and attendance was strong, with about 4,600 fans turning out the first day.

"We are very pleased to be playing on the west side of the state and were very impressed with most of the facility itself," said Garfield assistant coach Jack Hamann.

Hamann said coaches aren't happy that a week has to be cut from the season. He said the KingCo 4A changed the date of its jamborees to accommodate a nonleague match in the tighter schedule. League and district tournaments will be forced back, as well.

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association's executive board determined the move would be for 2004 only, as the center already had an event scheduled for the second weekend of November. The volleyball championships will return to the second weekend of November in 2005.
