SEATTLE PRINCIPALS DELAY CONFERENCE REALIGNMENT VOTE

After admitting that the issue is "more complicated than we realized," the Seattle School District's ten high school principals postponed a vote about whether the four largest Seattle high schools should be pulled out of the highly-competitive KingCo conference and placed into the smaller-school Metro conference.

Principals of Seattle's public high schools have approved the concept of paying to play for interscholastic sports participation beginning in the fall.

The proposal going before finance committee of the school board May 24 calls for a $50 fee for one sport and $75 for two or three sports.

Koutsky, a 5-foot-4 senior libero, amassed an impressive 55 digs to help lead the Bulldogs to a 3-2 victory over Juanita in a KingCo 4A match. It was the third straight conference win for Garfield. Koutsky, a team captain, came up with 108 digs during that span.

Didn't matter that Garfield defeated Ballard 3-0 in their regular-season volleyball match, Garfield senior Molly Swenson said.

And even though Garfield had won six of its last seven matches, she expected this one to be more difficult.

Swenson heard the Beavers had a "Beat Garfield" sign posted in their locker room for weeks during the regular season.

"So we knew it was going to be a battle," she said.

Chelle Ticeson's first day at Garfield High School had the kind of "Wonder Years" moments that freshman dread.

Hallways seemed like a haunted house. No one knew her name. She didn't talk to people, other than the upperclassmen who told her all freshman get blindfolded and dropped off deep in the country.

She didn't expect to play volleyball. But at a student orientation, Garfield assistant coach Jack Hamann turned her on to the sport.

Birmingham, Ala. — Freshman blocker Laura Washington (Seattle, Washington) has been named the Gulf South Conference West Division Volleyball Freshman of the Year as announced by the league office in Birmingham.
Washington was fifth in the conference in blocks (1.09 bpg) and sixth in attack percentage with a .331 average. She was second on the team in kills per game knocking home 3.26 per contest. [MORE ...]

Garfield, making its first state appearance, had a short stay, losing to Spanaway Lake and Eisenhower. The young Bulldogs, with just one senior in the lineup, didn't win a game, but made their presence felt. Under the direction of coach Leslie Hamann, the Bulldogs (19-9) have experienced a rapid turnaround. Garfield's league records in four years with Hamann: 0-13, 2-11, 6-4, 9-1.

Those nine victories this season earned the Bulldogs a share of first place, but Garfield was even better at last Saturday's conference tournament.
