TIME COMMITMENT FOR VOLLEYBALL
Like all worthwhile extra-curricular activities, high school sports require a substantial commitment. Volleyballthe ultimate TEAM sportdemands that diverse individuals work as one, in a fast-paced test of coordination, concentration andabove allcooperation. Building a team requires a commitment of everyone's TIME.
Our season is short … tryouts begin August 225, and--just twelve weeks later--the State Championships are November 14 & 15. Focus during this brief period is incredibly important.
As a member of the Garfield Varsity or JV, you are expected to:
Skills training, lesson plans and game preparations are all interrelated. Coaches will not have the opportunity to help players “catch up.” If you know you must miss a practice, you must call the coaches in advance. It will be your responsibility to ask a teammate to take notes in your absence and to brief you before you return.

ATTEND SCHOOL ON MATCH DAYS
The Washington Intercollegiate Athletic Association (WIAA) and Seattle School District prohibit any athlete from participating in an athletic contest unless, on the day of the match, they attended every scheduled class, or receive written permission from the school principal, Mr. Ted Howard.
On match days (primarily Tuesdays and Thursdays), the Varsity and JV teams must attend each other’s matches as well as their own. The team not playing helps officiate the other match and/or records statistics and helps the other team during warm-ups and cleanup. No one may leave the combined Varsity/JV matches early unless she receives express permission from her coach; that permission will rarely be given.
For most road matches at other high schools, all Varsity and JV players must ride the team bus to the game. A player should be prepared to do homework during the bus rides. A player may, however, go home from the opponent's gym with her parents. A player may go home with the parent of another player, but only if she brings written permission to the coaches in advance. All other players must return to the Garfield High parking lot on the team bus. A player may not drive her own car to or from Road matches. [Note: we make certain modifications for matches at Franklin, Ballard and Roosevelt, and for Saturday tournaments].

Saturdays: The 2008 Volleyball schedule will include several Saturday tournaments (Varsity and Junior Varsity), plus other possible team activities. In addition, the Sea-King District Varsity Championships span Saturday, November 1 and Saturday, November 8 and the State Championships conclude the following Saturday, November 15. That’s a lot of Saturdays during the twelve-week season. Be forewarned.
SAT test: In 2008, the Autumn SAT (I & II) tests will be offered October 4, November 1 and December 6. If the Garfield varsity qualifies for the 2008 District Tournament, the matches would conflict with the November 1 test. Please plan accordingly, and do NOT enroll for the November 1 test if you are on varsity.
PSAT test: In 2008, schools will tentatively offer the PSAT on Saturday, October 18. Area schools may also offer a PSAT on Wednesday, October 15, but signing up for a different venue can take additional advance planning. Please check with the Garfield counseling office.
Other conflicts: Some freshman science classes offer overnight field trips throughout the school year. Your volleyball commitment may preclude your participation in an autumn field trip; check with your science teacher. Many Garfield Volleyball players also participate in music, theater, journalism, student government, etc. Your volleyball commitment means you may have to reschedule some of those other activities during the volleyball season. Talk with your coach if you anticipate a problem.
