THE KINGGO 4A CONFERENCE was established in 1997, as part of the statewide creation of a new (4A) division for Washington State's largest high schools. The merger brought together three Seattle School District schools--Garfield, Franklin and Roosevelt--all formerly of the Metro 3A conference, plus seven former members of KingCo 3A: Bothell, Woodinville and Inglemoor of the Northshore School District, and Redmond, Lake Washington, Eastlake and Juanita from the Lake Washington School District. Ballard, of the Seattle School District, was added in 2002, and Skyline, of the Issaquah School District, in 2004. Skyline withdrew from the conference in 2006, to return to KingCo 3A.
The eight teams with the best regular-season records qualify for the Sea-King District Tournament. In 2006, the top three finishers at districts advance to the WIAA State Tournament.
Prior to 2004, the KingCo 4A Conference champion was the team that won the conference district tournament. Starting in 2004, the KingCo 4A Conference champion is the team with the best record in regular-season conference play. The district champion is recognized separately.
