VOLLEYBALL THE FIRST SPORTING EVENT IN GARFIELD'S NEW STATE-OF-THE-ART FACILITY

After two years in temporary quarters at historic Lincoln High, the Volleydogs returned home this Fall!

Our gorgeous new high school incorporates Garfield's signature facade and cutting-edge technology. The gymnasium and performing arts center have been built from scratch, and provide the premiere facility in the state for playing and watching high school volleyball.

A METRIC COURT

Think you know volleyball? Look carefully at the white lines on our new center court!

As far as we can tell (correct us if we’re wrong,) Garfield is the first high school in the state to employ metric measurements for its volleyball court. Volleyball is wildly popular around the world, and metric is the standard. We at Garfield intend to be part of the volleyball revolution!

In this gym, the old “ten foot line” is now the “three meter line”; that line is 5 centimeters wide. The full court is now nine meters wide by eighteen meters long. The top of the net is 2.24 meters from the court. If you forgot to bring your conversion table, you’ll note that the entire court is a few inches smaller all around than the old non-metric version. It means that defenders have more room to chase deflected balls, and that hitters will have to be ever-so-slightly more accurate.

And—glad you asked—the balls are now filled with .32kg/cm2 of air!

Volleyball is the centerpiece of television documentary

The Garfield Volleydogs' coaches--Leslie & Jack Hamann--are co-producers of GENERATION IX, a new public television documentary which premiered February 15 on KCTS | Seattle Public Television.

KingCo 4A conference welcomes three new members

KingCo 4A is now a twelve-team conference, as three schools have joined the league, and a long-time member has dropped out.

Issaquah, Skyline and Newport are the newest members of the KingCo 4A conference, while historic city rival Franklin returns to Metro 3A.

There are 410 high schools in Washington State; those with enrollments in the top seventeen percent are classified as 4A. Enrollment classifications are recalculated every two years

Volleyball popularity continues to climb

Volleyball is the third most popular girls' high school sport in the nation ... and climbing

The most recent survery (2004-05) by the National Federation of High Schools (NFHS) found that 386,022 girls play high school volleyball at 14,526.

Over the previous ten seasons, volleyball participation grew by 13.5 percent. By comparison, girls' basketball saw a 6.9 percent increase over the same period.

According to the survery, 41, 633 boys played volleyball in 2004-05 at 1,688 high schools.

Support the effort to bring fairness to the high school volleyball season

A survey of the high school athletic associations from all 50 states found that girls in the state of Washington are limited to one of the shortest and most restrictive high school volleyball seasons in the nation ... READ ALL ABOUT IT! ...

"Volleyball is a sport of beauty, grace and power. It's an intoxicating combination. It is the most appealing of all the women's sports. And the most underrated."–Tom Shatel, Omaha World Herald

"There is a power here you don't see in women's hoops. Few [basketball] players can dunk. Few block shots. But in volleyball, you usually get a power-on-power confrontation on every point. When one team sends two or three players to the net to block, it's fullback vs. linebacker, a goal-line stand."–Shatel

"It's a sport of speed, grace and cunning, played high in the air and low on the floor, with rapid turns of momentum. The players resemble ballet dancers with bazookas — ready, set, kill." –Michael Kelly, Omaha World-Herald
